An AI companion for Alzheimer's care. A companion robot for people living with dementia, built on what the care research says helps: reminiscence, social contact, cognitive stimulation and movement.

KIN, an AI companion for Alzheimer's care: KIN on a kitchen table. Conversation, with the family app alongside.
KIN on a kitchen table. Conversation, with the family app alongside.

Most technology built for dementia care is built for the clinic: white, wipe-clean, and designed to be looked at by a nurse. The person who actually lives with the disease spends most of the day at home, often with a spouse or a child who is tired. I wanted to design for that table, not the ward.

KIN starts from four things the research keeps pointing to: reminiscence, social interaction, cognitive stimulation, and physical activity. It holds personalised conversations, runs projection-based memory exercises and guided activities on the floor in front of it, and adjusts the difficulty to the person, not the diagnosis. Every month it produces a cognitive report, and over longer periods it looks for patterns of decline and quietly tailors the next exercises to them.

The constraint was tone. Nothing on it should read as medical. The shell is soft and warm, the face is two shapes, the status light is a ring you can ignore. The family app is where the numbers live, so the object itself can just be company.

Why this one matters to me: it is the design version of the problem I work on in marketing. The medicine exists. The reach does not. KIN is an argument that the gap can be closed with design, in a product you would let into your kitchen.
